A sick planet and zombies that roam it

An original brief science/fantasy piece, enjoy

On first glance it is the creature that is feared. Brainless and without any motivation other then filling their gaping desirous holes of want. It is only upon closer inspection that the seeker can find, beneath these walking replicas of a species once known as humanity, an environment cluttered and dying. The world they live on is not dead nor is it dying. It is merely shaking off the plague that as infested it with madness and destruction for millennia. ice-age

Like all planets it is a living entity in its own way. It breathes, feeds, thinks and feels. What is different here is that the zombie like species roaming its outer skin have long ago lost touch with the entity that is their world. When they first began to appear and populate they lived in close proximity with the life force that surrounded them. They roamed from place to place, following the massive herds of four legged beasts and moving ahead of the bad weather. Theirs was a life of constant peril, but freedom unmatched by any of the current social groupings inhabiting this world today.

As with every living thing the world gets cold as it sleeps and becomes ever warmer during its waking centuries. Noting each species as they rise into existence and eventually fade away into extinction is like the minutes passing for us. It sees everything that happens and feels the hammers and blades of the zombies clawing their way into its body in their search for more, always more. This species was different then some that came before. It evolved faster, perhaps due to the influences of those who came from the skies early on or maybe simply because they simply wanted more then any other species before them. Food and shelter were not enough for this virus. Like ebola and other similar viruses they bred swiftly and covered the surface of the world draining away its life blood and hacking mercilessly into its skin searching for more. 722d3f83f4b5fb8e4bcac79eb96de5c6

The world though sick is not afraid for like all viruses of this type it knows that this one will burn itself out quickly and with finality. When the last creature dies it will be mere seconds of its life that pass before another will rise up in its place. It will be a rotation or two around the star friend before all traces of what they did simply dissolve, wash away or are covered over with scabrous mountains and deserts. The planet watches as they amble aimlessly in their machines running blood drained through its skin down paths hardened with its innards. It will survive this species, it has survived all others. Its friend the star sends its rays down and the brother moon floats silently by.

Watching, ever watching it sees the madness engulf these creatures and their struggling to build larger and larger hives storing more and more of them in each. World sees masses of them battling for no reason greater then who will get to poke yet another hole in its skin. Some of the battles are over pieces of skin that are completely barren by the time they are done fighting. World wonders how a species that once saw what he was can now be so oblivious and desirous of self destruction. The weapons they create begin to rival even the sun for supremacy and the world sees. Sleep is coming, he can feel it, his friend the star is getting further away and he is beginning to get colder. He wonders if when he wakes up they will be there still, poking, prodding and using those things that make his skin shudder and break. iceberg-in-greenland-537x373

Sleep is coming, will they still live when he awakens next? He recalls the life before them, giant gentle beasts that lived and died without ever desiring to harm him. He had done what he could to protect them, yet, they had still died eventually. This new virus of sentience, this abominable plague of creatures once teaming with promise have become an overwhelming burden to him. He knows his life is safe, yet, he also realizes that unless they are changed back to what they were once or eradicated entirely it will take him millions of their years to recover. This is something he does not want, it is his life. It is time to sleep.
