Humans as a species are generally quite social. They live within societies that exist without much overt thought given to what that includes. Society as Thomas Paine so eloquently stated is always good while government is always bad. Of course he did not say that exactly, in fact, what he said was, ““Society is produced by our wants, and government by our wickedness; the former promotes our happiness positively by uniting our affections, the latter negatively by restraining our vices. The one encourages intercourse, the other creates distinctions. The first is a patron, the last a punisher.” – Thomas Paine, The Writings of Thomas Paine, Vol. I (1774-1779) > COMMON SENSE. ON THE ORIGIN AND DESIGN OF GOVERNMENT IN GENERAL, WITH CONCISE REMARKS ON THE ENGLISH CONSTITUTION.
Being an individual in a world filled with humans who simply desire to be apart of something is difficult. Freedom is not easy, it is hard work because it requires the individual desiring it to be willing to stamp out their fears and embrace others for individuals they are and not the beliefs they have. Alternatively we can as free individuals simply maintain arms length relationships based in verbal or written contracts. Either way the result is far less mingling and much more aloneness at times.
Knowledge is gained through several specific methods, and these methods follow.
- Study, individuals can study through reading, watching or listening to others. Conversation can also lend itself to study though many modern humans have lost the ability to truly converse and embrace the idea that others really care about whatever they can vomit out of their mouths.
- Experience, individuals can easily learn much more through hands on experience in whatever field they desire. They can learn to fence by volunteering to help someone who has done it for years. This approach applies to anything you can imagine.
- Genetic, individuals are born with certain genetic traits and what are known as base instincts. This is not an approach so much as what just is.
All of the above should serve only as a firm base for an individual to expand on by themselves or with others. Modern humans, specifically many in the world of science have become quite stagnant in many areas. Cognitive dissonance has caused modern humans to freeze when shown something that does not fit in to their perfect little fantasy world of now. As individuals those of us who desire freedom must be willing to embrace a belief and just as easily reject that belief if it proves to be without beneficial function to ourselves and what we desire. This does not make us evil or wrong, simply different, that unfortunately is often seen as evil and wrong by modern humans.
Once an individual who desires freedom is capable of overcoming their own cognitive dissonance, regardless the cause of that, they are well on their way to freedom. Mentally they can now begin to unravel their muddled thoughts and keep the good while discarding the bad. The greatest leaps of intellect and scientific achievement throughout history were a direct result of the individuals at the helm breaking down their own walls built of cognitive dissonance and sometimes quite energetically leaping into right, wrong and even dangerous conclusions.
The scientific world is full of men and women who will never rise above simple regurgitation of others ideas. However, the real stars are the ones who flaunt their individuality and face the group think mechanisms that control most humans head on. Newton postulated gravity existed and showed that and other “laws” of motion, Galileo, Copernicus, Darwin, Einstein, Curie, Tesla and many more all faced much derision and even death as a result of their non group think approaches. And yet, the world is a better place for it today. We now know, or theorize that what were “laws” of gravity are in fact merely effects of time based physics and more. What does this mean? Only that while these men and women may have come to the wrong conclusions at times what they did opened the doors for others to come to better conclusions and advance science further.
This same approach exists within government and religion and more. New ideas and approaches will always face rejection, death and worse. However, new ideas and the individuals willing to think them must exist else humanity will stagnate and die. And so that is why I can and do with pride say, I am an atheist and individual. What are you?
What say you and why?
