For the crime of being a kid and playing cops and robbers or cowboys and indians or army man, a 13 year old kid was murdered. According to the police, “At a news conference, Santa Rosa police officers involved in the investigation held up Andy’s pellet gun alongside a real AK-47 assault rifle. Lt. Paul Henry said that after deputies pulled in behind the boy, one shouted for him to put the gun down, then fired several shots. “One of the deputies described that as the subject was turning toward him the barrel of the assault rifle was rising up and turning in his direction,” he said. “The deputy feared for his safety, the safety of his partner and the safety of the community members in the area.”
Sadly, however, this means every kid that plays any of the games we all played as kids is now seen as a potential target. Not to mention, the endless barrages of shitty political rhetoric against the very idea that kids should play with guns will be under fire. All I can say is, as a 13 year old kid I never went anywhere without either my .303 enfield MkIV or my dads 10/22. I was loading my own ammunition before I could drive and had already engaged dangerous game by the time most kids entered high school. With my dad I hunted feral dog packs and feral hogs. More then one instance we came close to serious harm.
I was raised as I have raised my children. To respect the potential danger that a firearm may present when mishandled, abused or treated as a toy. This does not mean my children do not have squirt guns or know the difference between airsoft and a real firearm. My four year old girl knows the difference and will quickly voice her disapproval if someone is mishandling or toying with a real firearm. She doesnt hesitate to call the morons out for being a moron with a real firearm. I have had her tell long time gun store owners that they need to “clear that gun…and show her clear” before she looks at it!
So here is the real question, are the officers in this situation at fault or the parents. Honestly, I see it as a terrible preventable accident for several reasons. And yes I am going to line them out now.
- Better training for those who carry a gun and a badge.
- If you as a parent allow your kids to play with or use firearms, TEACH them, or EXPECT this.
- Society at large and government are the only ones here that can be blamed directly however.
The very design that is government regardless name of particular type lends itself to this type of thing occurring. By removing firearms from some and promoting them for others they create an irrational fear of a SIMPLE object. A firearm is a TOOL, nothing more. The society at large that supports and promotes the idea that we need these badged protectors and the uniforms and suits in DC to help us do more to ensure this will be more prevalent then less.
The solution to this is simple, promote community agorism and voluntaryism. Promote community over government and the idea that we need anyone other then ourselves to protect us needs to be disabused. Stop allowing the prevention of our natural right to self defense. Stand up and take back our natural rights.
